There are many reasons why you may need or want to take a term(s) off. Here are some common reasons below:

  • You just need a (mental health) break! School is stressful, and sometimes, you just need some time for yourself or to address personal issues, without the pressure of having to do readings and meeting assignment deadlines. I strongly encourage students to take a break when needed. Again, getting through college is a marathon, not a sprint. Please take care of yourself first. School will be here when you get back.

  • To address ongoing health issues. Being in classes while dealing with health issues can be very hard. Taking a break to focus on medical appointments and getting proper treatment is a wise decision.

  • You are going to have surgery. This one is related to addressing ongoing health issues. While you can potentially have a surgery and be in classes while recovering at home, do you really want to deal with readings and assignment deadlines when you're not feeling your best? A break from classes may be a good option.

  • You are going on a vacation! Woohoo! Please enjoy and don't even think about school while you're away.

Before making any changes to your enrollment, make sure you understand how taking a term off could affect your financial aid, course plan, and graduation timeline.

Steps for Taking a Term(s) Off (the Right Way!)

  • Contact Student Financial Services by calling them at 877-455-7648. Ask them about any potential financial impacts (i.e., change in financial aid eligibility) due to a change in enrollment. They can go over your options for taking a term off without being impacted financially. If you pay out-of-pocket, financial aid may not be a concern, but Student Financial Services can still discuss any financial implications of changing your enrollment.

  • Contact me as soon as you think you will be taking a term off. This way, I can drop you from any future term classes AFTER you have spoken to Student Financial Services. Always contact Student Financial Services first. You can schedule a call with me via my booking page to discuss your plans or you can email me, if that is your preferred form of contact.
